MCFP is starting out an EPO program for a variety of reasons that can bring many benefits to MCFP such as teaming up: being a partnership among different departments, MCFP is in fact a reality where systematized cooperation and ramified networking can give more than the sum of its components.

Here are some examples of EPO activities that you might be willing to get involved in within the MCFP EPO initiative (in the case you are already doing some EPO on your own, please consider becoming a partner with MCFP):

  • Having a common public voice on the social media: I have just opened a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MCFPumd) and a Twitter account (http://twitter.com/#!/MCFP_UMD) for the MCFP and I am looking forward to receiving your input about the challenging projects and fascinating endeavors that each one of you is involved in.
  • Giving public talks/school visits.
  • Engaging with local secondary science educators.
  • Participating in science fairs/demonstration events: for example the annual Maryland Day or the monthly “Physics is Phun” from Dr. Bobrowsky (www.physics.umd.edu/lecdem)
  • Supporting curriculum development or other projects with UMD experts such as Professor Joe Redish’ Physics Education Research Group (PERG, http://www.physics.umd.edu/perg/info.htm).
  • Engaging with physics departments at local minority serving universities (for example Shaw Howard University).

Umberto Cannella is the representative of the EPO MCFP initiative to let each one of you share with the rest of MCFP the EPO activities you are personally willing to do in the future and also those in which you might already be involved in. Suggestions are very welcome as well as questions or concerns. You can contact him by email at umberto.cannella@gmail.com.
