Professor Sylvester James Gates (Physics) will give a public lecture about the frontiers of physics at Montana State University’s Museum of the Rockies, December 8. Gates also was an invited speaker at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, St. Louis, MO on November 11, with a presentation entitled “Is Our Reality in The Matrix.”

Professor James Sylvester Gates Jr. explores the bizarre physical reality that lies behind our everyday experience of the world as a featured guest on the four-part NOVA series “The Fabric of the Cosmos,” airing this month on PBS and was published in both The Diamondback and The Washington Post as an article titled, "Mysteries of space are discussed by theoretical physicist S. James Gates Jr."
Faculty Position in Particle Theory The Department of Physics at the University of Maryland invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Elementary Particle Theory at the level of Assistant Professor. A more senior level position may be considered for exceptional candidates. The particle theory faculty currently includes Kaustubh Agashe, Zackaria Chacko, S. Jim Gates, Oscar W. Greenberg, Rabindra Mohapatra and Raman Sundrum. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, strong communication skills and capacity for physics education, and potential for leadership within the particle theory community. We expect that the successful candidate will complement the existing experimental andtheoretical strengths in the department. The preferred starting date for the position is August of 2012.
QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. in physics or a physics-related discipline and independent research experience. Good teaching is a high priority of the Department, and a potential for teaching excellence is necessary.

Sylvester James Gates took part in a panel “Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas” videotaped and broadcast by TVO.org, Ontario, Canada's public educational media organization. The panel was one of the scheduled events celebrating the opening of the new Stephen Hawking Centre, Perimeter Institute of Theoretical Physics, Waterloo, Canada. Gates is a visiting Distinguished Research Chair.
